Located approximately 60 miles of Dallas, Canton serves as the county seat of Van Zandt County. The earliest surveyors were men under the company of Dr. W. P. King. The earliest settler in this region was Jesse Stockwell in 1840. Following this, the first district courthouse and post office came into being in 1850. With the increasing population, development of saw mills, flour mills, cotton gins and banks took place. Iron ore and anthracite coal were discovered in 1887 and 1891 respectively. The city was incorporated in 1919.

Canton is known for its First Monday trade days, which is known as the largest flea market in the US. It started a century ago as a flea market and later became home to the most exciting home furnishings, collectibles and antiques. Many things have changed over the past 150 years in the Original First Monday Park, but the people keep coming back because of the relations between shoppers and vendors. At this place, you can ask questions and talk to antique dealers and collectors as well as meet the craftsmen and artists who create one-of-a-kind items.

Canton is home to the Van Zandt County Fair and Rodeo. This fair showcases a number of activities, including arts and crafts and livestock. The Annual Bluegrass Festival also takes place in August each year. It also hosted the Super Ride Championship that took place between 2003 and 2007. It showcased mounted drill and top color guard teams from all over the country.
